The United States will deploy a new mobile Marine unit to the southern Japanese island of Okinawa to bolster the country's defense against growing concern about China, Pentagon chief Lloyd Austin said Wednesday. "We are going to replace an artillery regiment with this force that will be more lethal and more mobile" by 2025, Austin said at a joint press conference with his Japanese counterpart, as well as with the heads of diplomacy of the two countries.

Rapid response unit planned

According to diplomatic sources from Japan and the United States, a rapid response unit (RCM) will be established to protect that region of the Asian country in the face of rising regional tensions, US and Japanese diplomatic sources said on Monday. It is estimated that between one thousand 800 and two thousand military personnel can quickly and effectively move small groups whose objective is to repel enemy attacks, in addition to supporting US ships or their allies.

Some specialists point out that this measure comes at a time when Washington and Tokyo reinforce their defenses in southern Japan, before the increase of military maneuvers of China near the coasts of Taiwan, which is a few kilometers from Okinawa, where since the end of World War II, a US military base is located.

Japan's Defense Ministry said that on Monday, a total of 57 Chinese aircraft and four military vessels conducted raids in areas around Taiwan. Chinese coast guard ships occasionally enter Japanese territorial waters, as China's regime claims the Senkaku Islands, which they call Diaoyu.

Since the end of the war between communists and nationalists in 1949, Taiwan is considered to have a sovereign territory, with an independent political government and system under the name of Republic of China, although Beijing maintains that it is a rebellious province and calls for what it calls "common homeland" to unite.

Taiwan is also a zone of tension between the governments of the United States and China, since in case of a war uprising it would be considered a strategic ally for the North American nation.
